T-Shirt Quilt of the Week - Harley Davidson Quilts

Harley Davidson T-Shirt Quilt

At T-Shirt Quilts of Texas we do quite a few T-Shirt quilts every week. That is hundreds of t-shirts each week. Some t-shirts are so obscure, you know that there has to be a story behind them. That's one of the reasons why I love my job.

Lately, we have had several Harley-Davidson (H-D) quilts. We LOVE creating H-D quilts. When I met my husband way back when, he had a '76 Sportster (he named her Dora), and we took many trips on her. Anyway, MANY years later, we still have a Harley, but she does not get out on the road as often as we used to. We love to see the Harley Davidson t-shirts come in to make a quilt. We had to roll out our '74 Sportster to showcase this quilt from a customer in Ohio.

Too Many T-Shirts? How Much Is Too Much? aka... Harley Davidson Quilts

We recently had a customer that wanted a LOT of t-shirts included in their quilt. I had to limit it to 42 t-shirts. That is a LOT of t-shirts and results in HUGE quilt.. The most we can load on our quilting machine is 6 blocks wide. That is 6 blocks wide (14" blocks, plus sashing, plus borders).

We have always limited our quilt sizes to 36 blocks. Keep in mind that is a huge King-sized quilt. However, this customer insisted we use 42 t-shirts. Of course they were Harley Davidson t-shirts. OK, I have to admit we have a soft spot for H-D t-shirts. Hubby had a '74 Sportster before he met me. He named her 'Dora'. So, how could we say no to this one?

Tied Quilts - Can They Be Quilted?

Tied Quilts -
Can They Be Quilted?

Most of the time YES. Most of the time, it is a T-Shirt quilt that was commissioned by a non-professional. They did not know what they were doing. Because we have a 'soft spot' for T-Shirt quilts, we offer a special rate for quilting these type of quilts. If you use the Crazy Puzzle pattern- scaled to fit your quilt, we offer a special discounted rate over our usual rates. And no, we are not prejudiced because you tried to do it yourself or used someone elses pattern.

This is an example of a quilt that has been tied. In this case, the 'ties' are pretty close together, and would probably hold up over time and many trips to the laundry room.  Many amateur quilters will just tie in the corners of the intersections of the t-shirts, meaning they could be up to 12 or even 18 inches apart.  That means that everytime the quilt is laundered, the batting inside is wadding up and disintegrating.

As one of the premier 't-shirt quilt' creators in the country, we get a lot of projects where we 'fix' quilts that were done by the non-professionals or well-intentioned family or friends. Because these folks do not have the equipment that quilting professionals use, they end up working on a project that is beyond their capabilities.

T-Shirt Quilt Gift Certificates for The Holidays

Give a T-Shirt Quilt Gift Certificate for Christmas

Oh no! You just now figured out that giving a T-Shirt Quilt for Christmas is the best idea you ever had! Oh wait... Christmas is just a little over a month away. Yeah really. 5 weeks. In the best of times, it takes five weeks to create your special t-shirt quilt. What to do?

Give a gift certificate. This way it will be a surprise - AND the best part is that you don't have to figure out what t-shirts you should use. Most of the time Mom is in the kids closet trying to figure out what t-shirts mean the most to their child. Or, hubby knowing this will be the best gift ever, does not have a clue how to get started. Last year, a husband bought a gift certificate thinking that his wife would get the standard 12 block generous throw quilt. Instead, she dug out a big box of baby clothes and had a quilt made from all of the clothes from when the child was newborn to toddler.
